The whole world never imagined waking up one day with a deadly pandemic that would shake everything up. COVID-19 is different from the previous ones. It is the real-life Thanos. Like Goblin’s Grim Reaper prowling day and night, spreading fear.

Then quarantine happened. We learned to be self-sustaining: planting our food, baking our bread, trimming our hair, and entertaining ourselves. As social beings, humans live in the solitary confinement imposed upon them so that they can live on and cope.

How about you? What kept you sane at that time?

As for me, when the lockdowns came, the K-drama floodgates opened, and I was in front of it, enjoying the swim and saying in Korean: “gwaehchanh-ayo!” (It’s alright. No worries.)  Thanks to my Netflix and Viu subscriptions and to a dozen friends who had been suggesting Korean teledramas. The lockdown is when my incurable wanting for K-dramas has sprung.

This book is simply about a K-drama fan who discovered a new world, an escape from the morbidity and paranoia that this generation’s pandemic has brought. Read into the author’s mind as she staves off the burden amidst the lockdown season, getting by with a lot of help from Netflix and friends, but with a little bit of a twist.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Inspired by the character Ten (an author played by Choi Siwon) in She was Pretty, Se (세), or Three, is a first-time author who writes for and manages her crowdsourced travel blog. She is also a media/marketing consultant on the side. Before the lockdowns, Se had been traveling abroad and domestically. The pandemic moved her to write a memoir that chronicles her months of confinement while on government-mandated home quarantine. Writing her first book about her newfound enthusiasm for K-drama during the pandemic helped maintain her emotional and mental health.

Segovia, Spain: The Cathedral, Alcazar, and Roman Aqueduct

If you are in Madrid, make it a point to take that trip to the nearby Segovia. It is another historic place minus the hustle and bustle of the busy capital. We tried both transportation means. First, we took the bus, which was an hour-and-a-half ride. It was only EUR4 per person for a departure at 11 AM. Returning, we rode the fast train at only EUR14 per passenger departing at 5:30 PM. The other options are whole-day packaged tours, including bus fares, to and fro. Get Your Guide offers convenient choices for activities and fares in Segovia. The bus ride offered nice views of what lies outside of Madrid. The train windows were closed throughout the trip because it was super hot! In fact, it was a bit warm inside the train. Our first stop was the Alcazar de Segovia, which was said to be the inspiration behind Disneyland's castles. You can see it in the video and you can tell why.  The true feast to the eyes was the Segovia Cathedral. In the video, we had a lengthy portion that sho...
